School of Design

Faculty of Design

Emerging from a renowned and distinguished history in its specialist subject areas at the LCC, the School of Design offers a range of course opportunities from pre-degree and degree study, as well as a successful postgraduate portfolio of provision, including specialist MAs, the MRes and MDes qualifications.

For students looking for advanced research, the School has an expanding PhD student research community supporting individual project exploration, which has direct relevance to the School.

Design study at LCC is a constantly changing and dynamic subject. Building upon a rich portfolio of course provision in typography, printing, graphics, spatial design, and interaction, we have developed a curriculum, which operates beyond fundamental learning structures, yet with essential components of visual composition, spatial awareness, and narrative.

Innovation is at the core of the work in the School of Design and, as we look to the future, we are constantly exploring opportunities for interdisciplinary and hybrid approaches to Design. Through forward thinking courses, grounded in the traditions of drawing, craft, theory, criticism and practice, we aim to encourage students to engage with the contribution they will make to the social, cultural and economic well-being of the communities of which they become a part.

We have established a substantial community of learners and we are committed to sharing our expertise as educators, researches and practitioners, nationally and internationally. For students and staff, the final product is not the goal, it is the exploration, thinking and learning along the way that matters. We believe that learning is about discovery, interaction and change, enabling all members of the School's community to engage in debate and articulate ideas and motivations intelligently.

All course tutors are actively involved in scholarly investigation and/or related, professional practice; this has helped the School to develop and sustain strong relationships with industry. These academic and professional links provide a valuable context to reflect the range of further study and vocational opportunities that are available to students on completion of our courses. These relationships also bring contemporary currency and cultural diversity to the dialogue and thinking, and this will shape the future of Design, in tandem with the development of new and emerging, communication, media and production technologies.

Supported by our alumni and strong links with the professions, we aspire to excellence in design practice and the transferability of skills, which have the potential to enable sustained employment and lifelong learning beyond graduation.

Graduates from the School of Design include John Brown (John Brown Citrus Publishing), Neville Brody (Typographic Design), Ruth Rogers (River Café), Jason Kedgley (Tomato), Angus Hyland (Pentagram), John Hegarty (BBH) and many others at the forefront of our subject.
