'Top up' your FdA to a BA Honours in Animation. FdA graduates must be experienced in time-based media and demonstrate competence to an appropriate level to enter the Honours year in animation. Honours level work will use animation software and/or traditional methods. An applicant's suitability will be explored at interview and through the submission of a showreel or other vehicle.
Theoretical aspects of Honours level work will be explored through a dissertation or equivalent. Successful applicants will need to demonstrate their willingness and readiness to undertake extended academic writing, but will be supported in this area by a bridging unit in the summer prior to enrolment and by the LCC Study Support department.
Students can expect to stay within their own disciplinary backgrounds and software competences, as they develop their animation work to Honours standard.
Students benefit from the College having been designated a Screen Academy in 2006 by the UK Film Council and Skillset. This puts LCC into a networking system with practising directors, producers and technical experts.
Learning and teaching
Courses in UAL span a broad range of art, design, communication, business, media, science and communication subjects. So the ways in which you learn and how your time is used will vary according to the specific course you are studying; this may be in studios, labs, classes, involve working alone, learning from peers in pairs or groups, or with external partners. Most importantly, no matter which course you enrol on, you will learn not only about your subject but also about how you learn and how to increase your knowledge base.
Our courses will guide you to take increasing responsibility and ownership of your work and your learning. We do this so that you will be ready and able to take full advantage of the full range of opportunities offered by the creative industries in the global economy.
Assessment
Assessment always sounds austere and foreboding, but it is not. We see assessment as a very real part of learning, rather than just a means of looking back at past work and measuring achievement; we believe that assessment helps you plan future work and develop new ideas.
Your work will be assessed through projects or portfolios, with written papers or research journals, and, on some courses, examinations. You will be graded according to a set of marking criteria that relate to such things as research, subject knowledge, methodology, and your capacity to analyse and reflect on your achievements. So don’t be afraid of assessment - it is the way to progress.

Recruitment and admissions
Selection criteria
The aim of the admissions policy is to ensure that all applicants who can display the necessary creative and intellectual abilities and motivation to benefit from studying are given equal opportunity to achieve a place on the course. The course team will encourage as wide participation as is possible, in line with the University’s mission, and will seek to broaden participation amongst all groupings in society.
Entry requirements (Home/International/EU)
For admission to the BA Animation (Top-up) course applicants normally need:
- To have completed an FDA in a relevant subject with a Merit Profile
- The potential to develop their practical and creative ability through academic study
- An aptitude for their chosen specialism and for working in the media
- Enthusiasm for the academic study of animation and for intellectual inquiry
- A willingness to participate actively in their own intellectual development.
These criteria will be demonstrated by a solid body of work on a related FdA or course of equivalent level and in interview.
Typically applicants will apply from related FdA or courses of equivalent level such as: animation production, moving image, interactive design, and motion graphic design.
The course team will ensure that applicants making a relatively late decision to progress for the FdA Animation to BA (Hons) Animation are not disadvantaged.
Admission procedures
Internal Applicants from the FDA will progress through the LCC Bridging Program.
External Applications will normally be made through UCAS.
Normally, applicants meeting the entry criteria above will be invited to interview, during which they will present evidence that they have the necessary motivation, background, capacity to contribute and the potential to benefit from the course. Applicants will receive additional information about the course at interview and be informed of the AP(E)L procedures, with the intention of giving them the maximum opportunity to decide on the appropriateness of their chosen course.
Bridging studies
Once selected students will be required to undertake the successful completion of a 20 credit Bridging Studies Unit. The purpose of the bridging studies is to prepare you for final units and in particular the written elements.
