Conventional book design and book art and craft skills covered on this course will help you create an innovative portfolio of work. They will also provide a strong technical base for future employment. The course is vocational and includes work placement opportunities. It is designed to develop a creative and innovative approach to 3D graphic arts using the book as the primary medium.
Designed within a credit-based framework this broad based programme provides specialist studies to a professional level. This course will allow you to create a dynamic portfolio of work with a strong technical base. Book design applications informed by the history and theory of artists books, fine art, photography, illustration, typography and design, combined with craft skills produces a course that will give you a strong foundation of knowledge and experience for future employment.

The emphasis in Year 1 is on the development of technical and creative skills required for producing books. In addition to acquiring basic technical skills, you will be introduced to strategies for developing content and book structures with the aim of producing books within the field of both Art and Design practice. Cultural and Historical Studies will examine the theoretical context and practice in Book Arts and Design and also begin to prepare students for essay writing. Personal & Professional Development will introduce you to personal presentation skills required for either employment in the Design Industries or creative practice within the Fine Arts and Crafts.

The emphasis in Year 2 is on further development of design and creative practice and theory. In addition to acquiring advanced technical skills, you will be expected to develop content and book structures with the aim of expressing your individual ideas for book projects. The Options will introduce you to new areas of application and practice. Cultural and Historical Studies will examine the theoretical context and practice in Book Arts and Design and also prepare you for your Dissertation via in-depth research and essay writing. In addition you will complete a period of work placement or a replacement project for Personal and Professional Development.

In Year 3, the Dissertation will enable you to develop research and analytical skills, deepen knowledge of a theoretical issue or a theme, and broaden the theoretical assumptions that inform creative practice. Personal and Professional Development will provide you with an opportunity to extend your presentation skills and help to develop a coherent strategy aimed at professional employment prospects through a final Reflective Report. The Book in Context and the Major Project are aimed at producing a body of work that not only reflects your creative abilities and understanding of Art and Design but also serves as a portfolio of work for employment in the Design Industry or as creative practitioner in the visual arts.
Graduates of this course frequently progress into roles in book design, alternative publishing, 3D product design, illustration and graphics. It will also prepare you for a career as an exhibiting book artist, teaching or postgraduate education.
2 A level plus 3 GCSEs (A-C), or equivalent qualifications, or relevant professional experience/experiential learning, or a combination of formal qualifications and experiential learning.

Portfolio advice
All applicants must bring a portfolio of their own recent work and will be interviewed on the dates offered.
Your portfolio should include some or all of the following: sketchbooks, drawings and visual research, design development, illustration, print and printmaking, photography and computer-aided design. Any other work may be considered if you feel it is relevant to your application.
You will be given feedback on your work, a tour of the department and information about the course and its content.
