Year 1
- Cultural Studies 1
- Creative Design Practice
- Print Practice
- Printmaking and Visual Studies
- Photography and Digital Production
- Personal & Professional Development
Year 1 will support your development of a range of study, research and communication skills and prepare you for work experience and Year 2. In the curriculum you will be introduced to a wide range of specialised design skills, techniques and applications appropriate for surface design practice. Creative Design and Print Practice Units will underpin the practical knowledge and techniques required to fulfil assignment objectives. You will study and develop practical skills in the areas of 2D design for printed textiles, ceramics and paper products.
At the end of the first year you should have developed a confident approach and working knowledge of the key design skills and applications involved in surface design. You will also be able to identify and plan further areas of study you wish to focus on in the next academic year, including work placements, exchanges and studying abroad.
Year 2
- Cultural Studies 2
- Surface Decoration
- External Brief
- Visual Analysis
- Personal & Professional Development
- Options (Cross College/Course)
Year 2 will allow you to develop the creative and experimental areas of application in your work. You will also have the opportunity to focus on the areas of Surface Design that appeal to you through a series of course Options.
Year 2 provides you with the opportunity to build and develop the skills you have learnt by engaging in commercially focused project work. You will work to an external client product brief (the External Brief Unit) which will require market research and analysis, the development of ideas and their realisation in the production of design sheets, colourways and painted and printed samples. Industry based projects provide opportunities to link to work placement. The increasing emphasis on the requirements of commercial practice will enable you to gain valuable experience and knowledge whilst preparing for career planning and the challenges presented in the final year.
In Year 2 you will consolidate knowledge and surface design skills through application which takes you into new and challenging areas of practice. By the end of the year you will be able to practice with growing confidence, independence and the maturity required for practice at honours level.
Year 3
- Cultural Studies 3
- Surface Design in a New Context
- Personal & Professional Development
- Major Project
In Year 3 the Dissertation will enable you to evaluate, study and intellectualise an aspect of Surface Design appropriate to your interests. In addition you will specialise in and consolidate an area of your choice before undertaking the Major project.
Personal & Professional Development will focus on your graduate exit profile, with an evaluation of vocational options as a freelance artist or maker, as sole trader or within the commercial world as a designer. Possible areas of post-graduate study will also be discussed.
Specialist Studies enables the realisation of a body of Surface Design work primarily through the Major Project but also through the "Surface Design in a New Context" Unit where you will engage in an experimental approach in the key areas of printed textiles, ceramic decoration or paper products. The first half of the year is focused on this Unit. The rest of the year is devoted to the Major Project which requires you to produce a self-managed piece of work which is assessed at the final public exhibition held at the end of the academic year. This project is produced to a professional level, utilising the college's extensive resources and will reflect your ability to produce an innovative body of work consistent with your proposed professional practice.
