This course provides a stimulating and challenging practice-based learning experience focusing on the creative skills and technical knowledge needed for a career in design and production of decorative printed surfaces.
The credit-based framework provides specialist creative practice in areas which include:
- Surface design for fashion and furnishing textiles
- Wall coverings
- Ceramic tiles and ceramic ware
- 3D surfaces
- Imprinted sports and leisure wear.
Subjects studied include:
- Drawing
- Digital imaging
- Print production including screen and digital printing
- Materials technology
- Imaging studies
- Cultural studies
Personal and professional studies include work-related learning enabling you to explore diverse career opportunities. You will develop key transferable work-related skills to help you gain the experience and confidence to move into the world of work.
This course is taught within the School of Design.
Who teaches the course
All of our staff are artists and designers with specialist expertise within the applied arts. The staff are: Tony Braithwaite, Betty Minter, Aida Haghshenas, Lisa Peru, Robin Raward, Gary Martin, Keith Martin, Francis Bull and Christine Lindey.
Year 1
You will study the following units:

Design and Production
In Year 1 you will be introduced to the disciplines of design and production. The learning experience will concentrate on the acquisition of technical knowledge and skills through studio and workshop practice. Work in Imaging Studies will support and be integrated with work undertaken in Surface Design Practice and Print Production Practice.
The context for practice is explored through the Cultural Studies I unit, which will enable you to examine the influences, which inform surface design and its place in the contemporary world. Work in this unit of study will support and integrate with Surface Design Practice I. This will enable you to place your work in a broader context and discuss it in an extended frame of reference.
The Personal and Professional Studies (PPD) unit will enable you to evaluate your study skills and develop a reflective and disciplined approach to the demands of the course. It will also enable you to place the course within the context of commercial surface design and production. Work-based Learning provides an opportunity to apply and extend knowledge and skills in the production of a specific surface design product. It will be supported with preparation and monitoring through the PPD course unit.

In Year 2 your studies will focus on the application and further development of the skills and knowledge that you have acquired in the first year of the course.
The course units will provide you with opportunities to apply your design and production skills in a range of different application and product contexts. This will enable you to enhance practical skills proficiency and to extend the range and depth of knowledge in the disciplines of design and production technology.
Core studies units provide opportunities for you to gain confidence in placing your own career interests and motivations within the context of contemporary culture and the world of work. You will be encouraged to engage in discussion and discourse on issues which, impact upon the demand for and the production of consumer products.
Career planning and preparation are an important aspect of Year 2. The Personal and Professional Studies unit will enable you to consider the career opportunities which are available to you and assist you in preparing for the next step following completion of the course.
Each year approximately 25% of our graduates go on to study at postgraduate level within University of the Arts London or elsewhere. This includes the study of postgraduate certificates in education. Another 25% usually find employment in a related area of the applied arts market place.
1 'A' Level/AVCE and 3 GCSE passes (A-C), or Edexcel/BTEC ND or equivalent qualification in related subject or relevant professional experience/experiential learning, or a combination of formal qualifications and experiential learning. For FdA Surface Design a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is an acceptable qualification.

Portfolio advice
Your portfolio should include sketchbooks, drawing and visual research, design development, surface pattern, print and printmaking, photography and computer aided design. Any other work may be considered if you feel it is absolutely relevant to your application.
