An intensive course for keen photographers who are considering a career in photography
Designed for people who are considering professional photography as a career, this practical one-year course will help to prepare you for entry into the photographic industry or progression to more advanced courses.
The course is structured around a series of lectures, seminars and workshops. You will be encouraged to engage in self-initiated project work in your chosen area of photography leading to the production of a high-quality portfolio. This portfolio will be the subject of the final assessment and an invaluable tool for embarking on your career in professional photography.
To succeed you will need to be self-motivated and imaginative enough to benefit from the facilities, creative atmosphere and the level of professional teaching available.
Subjects covered include the following:
- Reportage
- Portraiture
- Advertising and fashion photography
- Editorial photography
- Illustrative photography
- Landscape photography
As well as exploring traditional areas of photography, you will be able to develop an awareness of digital origination and the impact of digital imaging on traditional photography. The course will include an exciting series of contextual studies lectures and seminars in business practice.

This course will provide you with a thorough grounding in photography through the following areas of study:
- Camera formats
- Photographic printing
- Studio photography
- Image control and presentation
- Digital image management
- Contextual and business understanding
- Professional context and progression (through a major project)
Photography is a highly competitive business. Yet many of our former students have gone on to forge successful careers, most of them as freelancers. You can read about some of these successes in our downloadable course information leaflet (PDF- 106KB). Some students have also progressed onto higher education degree photography courses.
You will need four GCSEs (A-C), or an equivalent level 2 qualification (e.g. BTEC 1st Diploma, NVQ level 2) in a related subject area, or relevant industry experience. Applications from mature students are welcome with relevant experience and qualifications. Selection is made through an interview and portfolio of work.
