For this exhibition, entitled A Forming State, each artist has been encouraged to experiment and test the boundaries of the photographic medium. Encompassing the still image, video, installation and digital media, the show reflects the diversity of the contemporary approach to photography and its fast-changing nature.

Show highlights include:

Matt Theodore
Matt's photography questions whether our freedom has diminished with the rapid expansion of digital culture and whether the proliferation of technology has now become an alternative reality where people are mediated to the point at which we no longer react.

Liu Mozi
Liu observed zoo animals from outside their cages and found a difference between what he saw with eyes and what he captured with the camera. The bars of the cages were more obvious in the pictures than viewed by the human eyes. In his photographs he tries to remove the bars but finds the images of the animals became fragmentary; by breaking down the barriers of the cage the animals just turn to pieces.

MA Sound Arts

Private view: 19th November 2012 6-9pm
Exhibition open: 19th – 24th November 10am-5pm
Symposium: Saturday 24th November 11am-3pm

MA Sound Arts presents new works from 18 artists in an exhibition entitled On The Boundary of Sound, offering an in-depth enquiry into the diversity of sound in the arts. Its premise is whether we embrace sound or try to block it out, in the cacophony of the contemporary world there is barely a corner of our lives that sound doesn't reach.

In an age in which media appears inseparable from culture, politics and social interaction, this exhibition presents a crucial survey of the ways in which sound informs our presence and the space around us, as well as suggesting its intangible authority on our daily lives.

Highlights include:

Tim Bamber
Tim's work reflects multiple outcomes of an ongoing enquiry into sound in public space and the 'theatre' of protest. It considers the role of sound in a wider political discourse and postulates new sound strategies for appropriating public space and occupying soundscapes.

Julie Groves

Taking the audience away from our multimedia, sound-saturated world this installation sends the participant on a journey of discovery, demanding that they become consumed by the actual sound source. Past the initial consent, it forces involvement with the reality of sound: there is no absent-minded listening or semi-connection to what is heard.

MA Documentary Film

Private view: 19th November 2012 6-9pm
Screenings from 15th – 21st November
Additional Screenings 3rd - 7th December 6-8pm, Rich Mix, Bethnal Green Road, E1

MA Doc Show 2012 is a presentation of 24 films which showcase documentary in its broadest sense, exploring the diversity of this genre through both form and content.

At a time when documentary films crowd both television and cinema screens, this show will deliver a refreshing look at various political, social, and ethical issues, offering up new and at times challenging visions of the world we live in.

Highlights include:

Halfway At Sea, Dir. Leila Hussain
Located next to the sunniest town in Britain, Beachy Head is a picturesque tapestry of windswept farmland, rough sea and bright chalk cliffs. It is also the site of the second highest suicide rate in the world.

Keep it straight! Dir. Vinicius Salles
A London gym sets up the Gay Boxing Club and this film takes a close look at the steps of its founder, Ben Day and one of its members, Scott Valentine. These two characters have broken the rules by fighting the roles that society expects men to play, whether straight or gay.

Postgraduate Diploma Photography Portfolio Development

Private view: 19th November 2012 6-9pm
Exhibition open: 19th – 24th November 10am-5pm

The PG Dip Photography exhibition brings together the diverse work of five photographers. Using an array of photographic disciplines, the students have explored equally broad subject matters, which are brought together by their interest in people and their physical and psychological connections to the environment which surrounds them.

The underpinning theme of the show lies within each person's conceptual approach to image making, and a desire to create work which is not only visually engaging, but often questions the boundaries of the photographic medium.

Laura Thompson

Laura constructs figures made entirely out of disposable products relating to each of the senses. These are allegories for the masks that people wear in society in order to combat the reality of their lives.

Senseless Taste follows a lone figure's journey on coming to terms with its unattainable wish to one day be able to taste and the cruel reality of being constructed entirely of disposable forks and thus not having a mouth.

David Shih
Human Farm raises awareness of how people treat farmed animals in modern food industries, by having human models portray the pains animals suffer.

Postgraduate Design

Private view: 29th November 2012 6-9pm
Exhibition open: 29th November – 7th December 10am-5pm

Entitled Research: Project, this exhibition highlights the role of research in the design process and is a round up of final works by students of MA Graphic Design, MA Graphic Branding & Identity, MA Design Writing Criticism, MA Graphic Moving Image, MA Contemporary Typographic Media, MDes Innovation and Creativity for Industry, PGDip/Cert Design for Visual Communication.

Students undertake deep explorations of their chosen subject areas and research questions, sometimes in order to create proposed solutions to identified problems, but equally sometimes to identify opportunities for innovation and creative commentary or critical enquiry.

MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography

Private view: 12th December 2012 6-9pm
Exhibition open: 12th December – 9th January 2013

This exhibition reflects the varied identities and photographic approaches of participating photographers from around the world. It offers up new and at times challenging visions of identity with revealing insights into how experience is shaped by constraints, conditions and circumstance beyond an individual's control.

The exhibitions all take place in our galleries at London College of Communication unless otherwise stated.
