Francesca D'Ascari - BA Photojournalism
What have you been up to this summer since graduation?
Since I finished the course, I have set up myself as self employed and started my small business as a freelance photographer, including building a website. I have been working for the South London Press as a freelance photographer and of course I have been on holiday.
What did you get out of the Photojournalism BA?
Lots and lots of work experience, self-confidence and industry contacts. I also increased my knowledge of theory and practice of photojournalism. I was also given lots of support and guidance, which is what I miss the most.
What made you initially do the course?
My passion for photojournalism and documentary photography.
Talk us through your final piece/ project
My final project is called 'Diaries of Kurdistan'. It is a cross media project including photographic prints and a multimedia installation. It focuses on the stories of four Kurdish women, from different backgrounds, who forcibly left their lives in their home country to suddenly begin new lives as refugees in London. The project intends to highlight the current situation of the Kurdish population in Turkey. Kurdish women are doubly disadvantaged and vulnerable to abuse: first because they are women living in a traditionally patriarchal society; secondly, because they are Kurds. 'Diaries of Kurdistan' is a project aiming to explore the life of such exceptional women.
What's next in store for you?
During the past years, I have been working as press and editorial photographer, as well as working for NGO'S. This will be my step forward. At the moment, I am planning and working on my next project.
