Carlo Viscione: FdA Graphic and Spatial Communication

Year 1, FdA Graphic and Spatial Communication student Carlo Viscione sent us this image. He explains his project below:

We were asked to design an installation for an imaginary window front of a restaurant/bar in the area of Kings Cross and were given a list of designers/agencies to work for together with two words on which our concept has to be based on. My designer: Thomas Heatherwick. My words: soft, color. Final design: ‘amber’. Inspired by Heatherwick’s work based on discovering rather than crafting shapes, I designed an installation which is a source of light and refers to stalagmites to show the continuous but slow change of Kings Cross, producing very soft light, which will add and enrich the already toned down and intimate dining atmosphere.

The Voice and its Double

The Voice and its Double

‘The Voice and its Double’ is an online exhibition of experiments in the artistic use of the recorded voice curated by Michael Hiltbrunner and produced by CRiSAP. Inspired by his own artistic practice, the Zurich-based artist and researcher Michael Hiltbrunner has compiled an anthology that stretches back from the present to the time of the earliest recordings, selecting work that shadows his own preoccupations with repetition and with the original and the ‘copy’.

This international exhibition draws in scientific experiments, early sound-films, sound poetry, the classical avant-garde, conceptual and performance art and German Techno.

BA Surface Design students are currently in the studio working on material to exhibit as part of ‘Baroque with a Twist’, an exhibition of wallpapers and pieces resulting from a new competition especially set by The Wallpaper History Society.

Individual interpretations on the ‘Baroque With A Twist’ theme go from concepts of the poetic and philosophical, to the humorous and subversive.

Originally inspired by the V&A’s ‘Baroque’ exhibition, the work is now going on show in the prestigious Art Worker’s Guild, in central London’s Queens Square.

Guests from companies such as Zoffany, Cole and Sons, the V&A and the Whitworth Museum in Manchester will see the pieces when they form the backdrop to the Wallpaper History Societies’ AGM and Dinner on 2 December 2009.

The building is not normally accessible to the public, but will be open during the day on Saturday December 6th 2009 for the Art Workers Guilds’ Christmas Fair, so you can combine your Christmas Shopping with a touch of surface design hedonism.

South Korea trip

Photos from a recent trip made by six students from our MDes Innovation and Creativity in Industry to Samsung Art and Design Institute (SADI) in South Korea. The students undertook a five-day project in October with post-graduate visual communication students from the college.

The week started with a lecture from MDes Course Director Alison Prendiville entitled ‘The Widening Role of Design: Society and Technology’.

Students then worked in multi-disciplinary teams each consisting of one UK and three Korean students to answer the design brief “Mapping Seoul: Communicating Experiences”. The teams produced solutions including a visual communication tool for understanding the complexities of Korean food and a mobile phone application for translating Korean Hangal characters into universal pictograms. SADI were delighted with the project outcomes and would like to continue the collaboration next year.
